What is a Trysquare?

The machinist square or the trysquare is a handy tool used for inspecting the perpendicularity or the squareness of a surface against a reference plane. The tool comprises of two components; a beam and a blade held perpendicular to each other within controlled tolerances using two or more rivets. 

How to inspect perpendicularity using a trysquare?

 

 

  • Place the object under inspection and the machinist square on a common reference plane or a surface plate.

  • The length of the beam should be in contact with the plane while the length of the blade shall be upright against the object.

  • Once placed correctly use a thickness gauges to measure the distance between the various contact surfaces of the square and the object.

  • The thickest gauge leaf that can slip through without displacing either of the two quantifies the squareness of the object.
