Use of taper gauges

The taper is used to interlock two components having complementary conical tapers (male and female) during operations allowing the transmission of the forces through the workline. Thus it is essential that the taper is controlled within the limits to prevent any slippage which can damage the tool or the workpiece. The Taper gauges are used to inspect the taper on these parts in order to ensure an optimum fit. The gauges can be broadly classified into two categories Plug and Ring gauge which are futher classified according to the presence or absence of the tang.

Taper Plug Gauge

 

 

The taper plug gauges are used to inspect the female taper or the internal taper of the bores. The plug gauge is inserted into the bore with light pressure. At the extreme point, the face of the taper's large end should lie within the step provided on the gauge.

Tanged Taper Plug Gauge

The tanged taper plug gauges are used to inspect the female taper or the internal taper of the bores intended to use with tanged shafts. The plug gauge is inserted into the bore with light pressure. At the extreme point, the face of the taper's large end should lie within the step provided on the gauge.

Taper Ring Gauge

 

The taper ring gauges are used to inspect the male taper or the external taper of the shafts. The ring gauge is slid over the shaft with light pressure. At the extreme point the small end of the taper shank shall be either flush or short of face of the ring gauge. This can be verified using a straight edge.

Tanged Taper Ring Gauge

 

The tanged taper ring gauges are used to inspect the male taper or the external taper of the tanged shafts. The ring gauge is slid over the shaft with light pressure. At the extreme point the tang shall not protrude beyond any of the gauge's surfaces.
