What is a revolving centre?

Revolving centres are typically used for supporting long workpieces rotating at high speeds of upto 1000 rpm. They are mounted onto the tailstock and prevent the workpiece from leaning due to its own weight or deflecting due to the cutting forces acting upon it. Unlike dead centres, they are capable of rotating smoothly along with the work because of their bearing assembly thus reducing the frictional forces and the need for external lubrication. 

Bearing selection

Akros revolving centres offers a sealed arrangement for the housing preventing any external contaminents like coolant and metal chips from entering and damaging the bearing assembly. The number of bearings impact the maximum speed and the load carrying capacity of the centre.

  • Standard Triple bearing: recommended for Max 1000 rpm, load capacity upto 2100 kg axial and 1500 kg radial @100rpm.
  • Quad Bearing: for heavy duty applications, recommended 750 rpm, load capacity upto 4000 kg axial and 2750 kg radial @100rpm.
  • Penta Bearing: for extra heavy duty applications, recommended 600 RPM, load capacity upto 10000 kg axial and 4500 kg radial @100rpm.

 

Point selection

 

Akros live centres come loaded with a 60° stub point for standard lathe operations. However, different points for various applications can be provided on request.

  • Carbide point: Provides higher wear resistance and durability.
  • Extended point: Allows greater tool clearance for various operations on the workpiece
  • Female point: These centres have an internal bore instead of an extruding point and are used to hold shafts where countersink holes are not permitted.

Pipe centres are also available for holding hollow pipes and shafts with large bores.
