What is a function of a knurl?

Form knurling is the process of material displacement where a knurl is pushed against the workpiece to achieve the required pattern. The knurls come in straight, left spiral, right spiral, male diamond and female diamond pattern with a uniform pitch. The knurled pattern on the workpiece provides higher gripping strength by increasing the friction between the contact surfaces thus preventing slippage during operations. 

  • Plunge knurling: The knurl is pushed radially into the workpiece
  • End Feed Knurling: The knurl moves along the length of the workpiece
